What to Do When a Death Occurs

Step 1
Contact the Masjid Immediately

As soon as a death occurs, contact Jamia Islamia Canada at 905-279-3040 or the masjid office. Be ready to provide the name of the deceased, time of death, place of death, and your contact information.

Step 2
Obtain the Required Release Documents

If the death occurred in a hospital or care facility, staff will issue the required release or death documentation. Funeral arrangements can begin only after this paperwork is completed.

Step 3
Do Not Make Independent Arrangements

Do not contact funeral homes, cemeteries, or transportation services on your own unless instructed. The masjid will guide you to ensure all steps follow Islamic requirements.

Step 4
Transportation to the Masjid

Once documentation is complete, the masjid will arrange transportation of the deceased to the masjid facility for preparation, if required.

Step 5
Ghusl and Preparation

Ghusl and kafan will be performed according to Islamic guidelines by trained individuals.

Step 6
Janazah Prayer

The masjid will coordinate and announce the Janazah prayer time once burial arrangements are confirmed.

Step 7
Burial

The deceased will be transported to the cemetery for burial. Cemetery related arrangements and fees are handled directly with the cemetery.

Step 8
After Burial

Family members are encouraged to observe Islamic etiquette, make duʿāʾ for the deceased, and maintain patience. The masjid can provide general guidance if needed.

death at hospital

If a death occurs at a hospital or care facility, hospital staff will guide the family through the initial steps and issue the required release documentation. Once documentation is completed, contact the masjid to begin funeral arrangements.

DEATH AT HOME

If a death occurs at home, emergency services must be contacted immediately. Authorities will attend the scene and provide guidance on next steps before any funeral arrangements can proceed.

death certificate

An official death certificate is issued by ServiceOntario after the death is registered. Applications will be sent by the funeral cordinator using the deceased’s basic information, and the certificate is mailed once processed.

CEMETARY

The masjid can assist with coordinating burial arrangements with local Muslim cemeteries. Cemetery fees and burial plot arrangements are handled directly between the family and the cemetery.

transportation

Transportation of the deceased from the hospital or place of death to the masjid and then to the cemetery will be coordinated once documentation is complete.

SUPPORT

The masjid provides general religious guidance and support to families throughout the funeral process. Families are encouraged to reach out for assistance and clarification during this difficult time.
