

Islamic Marriage
Jamia Islamia Canada offers Islamic marriage (Nikah) services in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah and in compliance with the laws of Ontario. Nikah ceremonies are conducted by authorized Imams and are recognized both religiously and legally when all requirements are met.
Getting a Marriage Licence in Ontario
A Marriage Licence is required before a Nikah can be performed and legally registered in Ontario.Where to Get a LicenceMarriage licences can be obtained from any city hall or municipal office in Ontario, including:
- City of Mississauga
- City of Brampton
- City of oakville
- or any other Ontario municipality
The licence can be used anywhere in Ontario, regardless of which city issued it.
Requirements for the Licence
Both individuals must attend in person (or as required by the city) and bring:
- Valid government issued photo ID (passport or driver’s licence)
- Applicable licence fee (varies by city)
- Divorce documents if previously married
- Parental consent if required by law due to age
Marriage licences are typically valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
What to Bring for the wedding
On the day of the Nikah, the following are required:
- Valid Ontario Marriage Licence
- Government issued photo ID for both parties
- Two witnesses with valid ID
- Agreed upon Mahr (dowry) details
- Any additional documentation requested by the Imam
Nikah appointments must be booked in advance and are subject to availability.
Legal Registration of Marriage
Imams at Jamia Islamia Canada are registered with the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services of Ontario and are authorized to solemnize marriages.
Once the Nikah is completed:
- The marriage documents are signed by both parties, witnesses, and the Imam
- Jamia Islamia Canada submits the completed marriage registration to the Government of Ontario
- The couple may then apply for their official Marriage Certificate directly from the province
The Marriage Certificate is issued by the government and not by the masjid.
Important Notes
- A Nikah cannot be performed without a valid marriage licence
- Booking a Nikah does not guarantee availability without proper documentation
- All ceremonies must follow masjid guidelines and scheduling policies
- The masjid reserves the right to refuse services if requirements are not met
Booking and Inquiries
To schedule a Nikah or inquire about Islamic marriage services, please contact Jamia Islamia Canada directly. Early booking is strongly recommended.
Use of the masjid hall is subject to availability and must be booked in advance. All required fees must be paid prior to the event to confirm the booking and secure the date in accordance with masjid policies.
Sessions provide an opportunity to sit with an Imam or qualified counsellor to discuss expectations and practical matters to help couples prepare for a strong and informed marriage.
Guidance is provided on selecting witnesses and determining Mahr in accordance with Islamic principles to ensure clarity and mutual agreement.
